Dancing Dolls UK: A/W 2012- 'Through the looking glass'

A detailed insight 'through that looking glass' of the fairy tale notion that prompted my Dancing Dolls UK (DDUK) AW12 collection 'Closet Princess' .

Vicky wears 'Midas' min lace brocade dress

So, What inspired your collection?
Its one of the most commonly asked question a fashion designer is asked each season.

And with the Autumn/Winter 2012 season, now in full swing, it seems a fitting time for me to 'Share my World....' and disclose to all the guys and dolls the foundations and directions, that stimulated my AW 2012 collection.

About the collection:

"Its not just in fairytales; where there are princesses. We all deserve 'our happily ever after'- to be that princess.... even if only in our closet"

Closet Princess is my 3rd collection for Dancing Dolls UK and is inspired by my belief that inside every woman is a princess- although we may not, be allowed to live it to our fullest.
What? With this economical climate and all that jazz??

Many of us gyals were brought on stories of princesses that "lived happily ever after".
Well, can we snap, back to reality-  as I am certainly not riding around in a pumpkin shaped glass carriage or sleeping for 100 years to wake up looking as gorgeous and wrinkle free as ever- we grow up to see it quite differently.
There is no happily ever after.
We have to work hard to get and maintain what we want in all aspects of our lives- our children, our partners, our work environment.
But in our private moments, I believe we all still feel, as well as like to create the make believe, just like our childhood princesses.
Even... if it only lasts for the hour or so you put on make up, get dressed and to take pictures in our mirror!
...And when, the clock strikes 12, we lock it all back in the closet, as we shut our wardrobe to go back to the duties that dominate our daily lives.

I wanted to play on this idea of being a princess, not only in our inner thoughts, and explore it in a way which allows that idea to be incorporated for the modern woman; within their attire- a representative of them self, letting it transpire in the apparell that our closet's behold.

I wanted to mimick an opulence of feminity and royalty associated with princesses: heavily jewlleled handcrafted pieces, in Dancing Dolls signature  jersey fabrications, with a 'grown sexy' announcement using rich, lace brocade cloths, and jewel embellished leather accessories. All with a modern twist of an edgy, yet commercial narrative, still keeping true to protraying the urban chic feeling of DDUK.

In secret, I am a Princess, and this is my interpretation.....

"We can all be princessess... if only, in the closet"

Midlands Fashion designers awards Vs Leeds Fashion Show 2012

On the 19th October, I had the privilege of showcasing my work for my label Dancing Dolls UK, simultaneously at two of the best events on the Fashion calendar (my opinion) for a designer at my level:
1) Midlands Fashion Designers awards in Birmingham (MFDA) and
2) Leeds Fashion show (LFS) in Leeds, obviously.

I didn't win the in the catergory, I entered 'Independent designer 2012'  at MFDA -Sad face- decided upon by the weighty judging panel comprising of : Debra Hepburn- founder of  young British designers, Lizzy Gardner- noted Fashion stylist and journalist, Alan Sharman- founder of Alan Sharman model agency and Gavin Douglas- multi awarding fashion designer, from Birmingham, himself.
Didn't they (MFDA) do well??!
The 'Independent designer' award went to fellow designer and friend (who I always manage to have ROFL, everytime we catch up)- Tamara Joseph, with her label 'Cataylst'.
I didn't enter the competition at LFS, and was there merely to have my garments sashay down the runway.

It's always an exciting, nerve racking and expensive prospect for me, showcasing my work on a runway.
It means, I get a chance to hear direct from Fashionistas great and small, whether the last fews months of dragging my body through sheer tortue has in any way shape or form been worth it;  the paying of minimal attention myself, frustration, sleep deprivation- the contemplatation of taping open my eyelids, is always considerded when pumped with caffine drinks, coupled with extreme fatigue and the sewing through my own fingers with the sewing machine.
True story, that. So deep the needle went- in my momentarily dizzy spell- I thought I would collapse from shock- alone at the studio at random o'clock in the morning.
But, the big man upstairs loves me and that didn't happen, hence why I am here writing this blog.
I swear, if anyone had seen me in the last few months, they would be horrified, if I told them I worked in fashion, I mean tracksuit bottoms, ballet pumps and a fur coat...yes- I really did go out like that. They would be more inclined to thinking I had escaped from a loony bin and only dreamt that I worked in this industry called 'Fashion'...
Someone one remind me why do I do this again??

Anyway, so in the red corner, we had showcasing pieces from Dancing Dolls UK SS13 collection, 'Finally Exhaled' at MFDA, represented by myself, Paulinah Eboh-Sampson.
In the blue corner, we had showcasing pieces from Dancing Dolls UK AW12, 'Closet Princess' at LFS, represented on my behalf by Leeds based stylist Jyoti Matoo of VOIR Styling. (Bowing graciously at her feet- ♥ u girl!)

I wasn't actually at the LFS, so you could argue that my analysis is unfair, but you'd be arguing with yourself, cos of this is my opinion, based on the job I am there for- a fashion designer, looking and working on getting maximum exposure for their brand and the results I have seen relating to the latter.

THE VENUES

MFDA-With such a fantastic venue for last years MFDA awards, I had high expectations for this years venue.
On hearing that the event, was due to take place at the Botanical gardens in Birmingham, I thought the location would come out trumps, having previously worked at Botanical Gardens- in my waitressing hay-day, I am very familiar with the set up, and its fantastic lay out.
The venue, although beautiful, did not deliver what the venue used last year. for MFDA had. The first thing, I noticed was the runway was way too short, and didn't run right all the way to the back of the venue. OK, this was possibly the only problem of the event, but it had a domino effect, that affected other little things, such as the fact that audience members at the back of the venue had difficulty seeing the show.
I, however, managed to 'steal' a seat right near the front to watch the majority of the show. The 'move-you-lose' rule was in full affect on this occaison.

This aside, the venue actually looked damn good in the images captured at the event, and its great to see how far Jenny and the team at MFDA have come with this event, to be even able to consider and use the Birmingham Botanical gardens.

Leeds Town hall. Image by Lee Hicken
LFS this year, definitely upped its game major style this year! The scene was set at the same venue as last year- Leeds town hall, with similar staging as last years LFS event, which I had attended, I might add- an all white back drop and runway- but what got my two thumbs up and gave LFS my 10/10 is the amazing full size screen that appeared behind the models, as they ripped the runway.
Totally awesome!
I don't think there was anyway, any audience member could miss the action on the stage or would have been in any doubt, as to which designers collection was on stage at any given time, because the designer/brands name was projected in big lettering on the same screen.

THE MODELS
And the award for best models, goes to.....(Drum roll) Midlands Fashion Designers awards.
When you have runway models, like Elena Luzaic- possibly the best runway model, I have had the opportunity to work with- and a strict height and size restriction on the models. Its a definite no brainer!
Don't get me wrong LFS had some great models too, as you can see from all the images, I have featured with this post, but some of them. Come on! When the 'model' is posing with her legs, so wide apart, one might expect she is about to give birth. It doesn't make for such a great runway image, now does it.
And, can we get over the hands-on-hips-at-end-of-runway pose already?
Elena Luzaic in Dancing Dolls UK SS13. Image by Rahart Ali-Khan

Ouch- that was harsh, even by my standards, but lets not get it twisted, I have had to become this way, purely because of the industry I work in. My work has been looked past, chewed up and spat out simply because of the models I have worked with, so I have a zero tolerance for mini runway "I can wear heels" models or plus size models pretending to be size 0.
A model has the length of a runway or the seconds, its take a potential customer to skim past an image to sell a garment, without ANY vocal interaction. Its a hard job and not everyone can do it! FACT!

PHOTOGRAPHY
Getting and using run way images from group Fashion shows = ADDED HARD WORK! This year has been now exception, I have had to really scour around the internet, for the best images from both events.
Its always a major problem finding and using GOOD images from any runway shows, I have been involved in, unless I have teamed up with a photographer, who has provided me, directly, with great runway imagery or the event organisers have promised to supply me with images.
Neither organisers, did the promising of images for the designers this year- neither are they obligated to, but I still issuing 'Nul Points' here to both. *Humph- Folds arms across chest*.
Silly me, for not being on the ball this time round and organising it myself, for this year.

PRESS
Its great that both events now attracts good press for all the designers involved, with bloggers and fashionistas firing out writes up like bullets. Its definitely a sign of the prestige of these events!
I do hope that the 'Press station' area is addressed though, by next year's event- in both the MFDA and LFS camp.
It would be nice to see a designated spot for photographers and other media crew to set up at the end of the runway, where they can capture good shots.
MFDA saw some photographers, struggling, toppling over- occaisionally- and shaking off cramps as they tried to get some shots at the event. All whilst being shooed out of the way by the annoyed audience members, because they were blocking the view of the show.
LFS saw some photographers capturing unflattering shots under models skirts and some other weird angled pics. So, I'm thinking maybe they didn't have a set Press station either? I wasn't there, so I'll SNM.

If you are a photographer, who was lucky enough to have capitaliased on the 'move-you-lose' rule or the 'first-come-first-serve' rule to bag a prime location at any of the events. You will probably find, if I have seen it. Its on here, so thankyou!

There you have it. The low down from a designer's point of view, hopefully not too blatantly rude, but definitely honest.
All the little jibes aside, I must stand up and applaud both the MFDA and LFS team for their outstanding effort in presenting such fabulous events! I hope my write up is not percieved negatively and is just used as an inspiration for upping the levels again next year, as both organisers continuosly do.
Who knows maybe next year, we may see fellow Birmingham-born designer, Osman Yousefzada on the judging panel at MFDA and 3D virtual models at LFS?

Style File by Dancing Dolls UK: 'Made to measure'

OOooOOoo- How much do we love the look of this one??!! Its the rivet embellished body con with sash by Dancing Dolls UK in bespoke colour 'Flame red'!

The original- as only our dolls will no- was created in a cream matt hue priced @ £70.00. Available here: https://www.fashionkillerz.com/p/Rivet+embellished+body+con+mini+dress+with+sash/332/But when a DDUK customer requested it, in alternative colour, we at Dancing Dolls HQ were much obligied to deliver.....and we think the outcome so hot, we've added it to our style file- styled by Dancing Dolls Designer, Paulinah Eboh-Sampson, herself.
Rivet embellished dress by Dancing Dolls UK

Our bespoke service allows customers to have a variety of Dancing Dolls designs created in a fabric colour of their choice. Terms and conditions apply.
For more information on using our 'made to measure' service, please check out our website www.dancingdollsuk.com or drop us a message via our Facebook page www.facebook.com/dancingdollsuk.

In keeping with our mission; "to dress our dolls ostentatiously..."
Paulinah says: 'With such a fiery colour, why not turn up the heat, light that fire and shazam. Its all about statement, statement and more statement with this dress.
So, if money is no object, then I'd say go all out and head for your nearest Christian Louboutin outlet for this limited edition 'Rodarte' ankle strapped beauties. (Sigh)

Well, lets be realistic- the reality is that these kind of bad ass shoes are only accessible to a few of the rich or famous, such as the likes of singer PINK and Victoria Beckham, who have both been sporting these bad boys!

So our suggestion: our customised spiked and rhinestone embellished platforms with matching bag by Dancing Dolls UK. Available to order- lead time 28 days.

Shoes & bag by Dancing Dolls UK. Available by order. Image by Andy Baines

Black ankles boots are also a great alternative, if your trying to keep it funky and not to matchy-matchy, but remember a concealed platform pump or stiletto will elongate the leg length, in comparison to ankle boots.
Paulinah recommends:
- Slicked back hair in a neat smooth low ponytail.
- Keep the earrings relatively small
- Whack on the lipstick; darker skin tones- go for a bold red, whilst lighter skin tones can opt for either red or nude tones- with a demi smoky eye to accompany those nude lip tones.
How adorable are these?
Complete the look with black nail lacquer. And you're ready to rock and roll!

All Dancing Dolls customers are entitled to free style tips, with each purchase made.

Dancing Dolls UK: Style file- Celebrity style steal

Check out the latest 'Celebrity Style Steal' by Dancing Dolls UK (DDUK), which we've added to our style file, with stylist tips by DDUK designer Paulinah.

This time round, we have recreated our own 'made to order' version of Gywneth Paltrow's slightly revealing red carpet dress. Which one? I hear you cry- the one worn by the star to the premiere of her 2010 movie "Country Strong."

As risque, as one may consider this- we do like....and if its good enough for Gwyneth, then its good enough for the dolls house. We do, like a bit of Mrs Martin, at DDUK.

Dancing Dolls creation

"For this style file, I've teamed the dress with these cool ass, ‘Esme’ studded triple colour platform pumps from KG by Kurt Geiger."

As for the nails; Lets do it big with neon yellow. Well, if you're gonna rock the neon brights trend. Then you got to do it to the fullest- right?

Acessories
Paulinah says: "I've taken the mint green from the pumps, as a base. I think a statement ring and earrings in this colour, would go lush.
To complete the look, throw in a coral clutch bag. Ok- Not feeling so adventurous? Then you could go a white clutch.... Still need to be a little safer? I guess, you can make it matchy matchy with a beige bag??! Any of the above would look hot.
Beige makes a great colour match for pastel colours, such as baby pink, powdered blue, lilac as well as other colours such as purple, coral and turquoise."

We aren't beauty experts, but I would suggest keeping your make light with nude tones. If you're feeling atad brave, you could add some HD eyebrows to finish.
But hey- dolls, only try this trend, if you can excute it WELL. HD Eyebrow fail= never a good look.
And wull-ar! What you think about that, huh?

Paulinah also recommends:
When mixing colours- no more than 4 colours at a time...unless, of course you don't mind looking like a rainbow.

If you like what we have done with this ensemble and fancy getting one for yourself or would like to have your own bespoke piece made and styled by Paulinah. Don't be shy- drop us a line and we'll do our best to accomadate. (You can contact Dancing Dolls via our social media sites, links are listed below)
Dancing Dolls UK, create a limited amount of made to order garments, as well as creating some of our own designs in alternative colour various. T&C's apply.

Until, the next time, keep staying fantablous xx

Dancing Dolls UK: "We are the revolution!"

Its June 2012 and in every corner of every city, I have been to, in the last 6 months all I see is monochrome stripes. With the amounts of monochrome in my peripheral vision, I have to remind myself that I am not strolling around the plains of sunny Africa, surrounded by zebras and that these are women walking around in one of this seasons hottest trends! That coupled with, the British weather that has been doing what it does best (raining)- is a definite reminder, I am still in the UK.
Its nuts to see how much of a craze this trend has become!

BANG ON TREND! April 2012

Lets rewind 2 years back to February 2010- long before Rihanna was getting up close with Drake and dancing in the streets, singing “Whats my name?” wearing a monochrome striped jacket.

Rememeber this picture- yes it was taken on 27th February 2010
Rebecca Fisher by Liz Deeming

.....And what do we have here?? Monochrome high waist leggings by Dancing Dolls UK, modelled by Rebecca Fisher- one of my earlier creations under Dancing Dolls UK, whilst I was still trying to establishing the company and making a statement.

And back then, which so seems like a lifetime ago, while I was screaming that black and white stripes were the shizzle.
I even remember one comment: “Wow! Those leggings are awesome, I don't think I could wear them or pull them off though”
Hmmm....judging from some recent Facebook profile pictures of that same persons, I'd say thats changed! Ha!
Ar-well. I told you we are the revolution....

So, well done to the few that purchased some of our fabulous black/white striped at the time. Unfortuneately, this product is no longer available form Dancing Dolls UK.
We have swiftly moved long. Long before trends become high street crazes, Dancing Dolls UK would have loved them and left them. We are aiming to be innovators here, at Dancing Dolls HQ

Dancing Dolls UK's runway debut of 'Closet Princess' A/W12 takes Essex Fashion week by storm!

Easter bank holiday weekend- actually Easter Sunday 8th April 2012 UK time- when I was supposed to spend some much needed family catch up time. I, instead was trudging along on my nightmare journey to the CEME conference centre in Rainham, Essex; where the Essex Fashion week- in a day- was taking place.
With the bank holiday service on offer by London transport, I was late! Super late in fact....not the fashionably late, I wouldn't have minded being.
I was so late, it ment on arrival it was a quick dash to backstage to try to set up and meet the models and the team behind the whole event who had up until this point I had only had email and telephone contact with. No posing on the red carpet for me- boo!
Backstage was mayhem! But for a show this size it was to be expected!

All in all, it seemed to me like such a great event; an amazing platform for Dancing Dolls UK: who definitely did not disapoint with its runway debut of the 'Closet Princess' Collection.... Yes- I said that, and maybe I am being biased in saying so. But, I have seen the tweets, emails and comments that have been coming in since the show.
"Was great meeting you on Sunday and I must say again your collection was amazing best of the day!" Layla Flaherty (ScouseWives)

"Amy (Childs) loves your brand!" Julie Childs (mother-Amy Childs)

I also gave out business cards a plenty- with a lot of talk of music videos in the air- now I don't know, if this is coming from people with big music video or little music video backing, if you get my drift!
So that is just a waiting game there.
Image by Rob Shepperd. 'Midas' mini dress
Unfortuneatly, I do know that; the music video talk didn't come from anyone in So Solid's Romeo camp. Although, he was sitting in the front row during my collection.

But hey! I will say this- though, Layla Flaherty of E4s 'Scousewives', Amy Childs and her mother: all got love for Dancing Dolls UK, so who knows what possibilities can arise from there!

Talking of 'celebs', there was a fair few in what Essex has to offer. I am not a celeb hunter, but I do understand, how important they are to a small growing brand, such as mine, so it was definitely good opportunity for me to push my much improved networking skills.
For, all those who care, in terms of what the Brits consider 'celebs'. I saw a few including some of the TOWIE gang and even took a couple of pictures with the likes of Amy Childs, Gillian O'Toole (Scousewives) and a few others.
Me with Gillian O'Toole (ScouseWives) and Rylan Clarke (Signed by Katie Price)
Amy Childs and myself-not my most flattering pic :-/

I remember seeing other TV hoppers like Louise Glover (Glamour girls), her fellow glamour model counter part, whose name refuses to enter my brain and Kirk Norcross, and thinking: 'he/she looks familiar, where do I know them from?'
Obviously, I don't know them. I've just seen them on the TV! Ha ha!

'Celebs', extraordinary amounts  of fake tan, eyelashes, hair extensions and all the rest of the Essex razzmatazz aside. I do have my little niggles that I have to air too.
'Envy me-reloaded' hooded swimsuit. Image by Rob Sheppard
Apart from almost having to change the order of which my garments were showcased, due to a backstage fight with the tit tape - all went pretty much as planned for a lastminute.com moment and the finale piece: the 'Envy me!' deep V hooded swimsuit reloaded...which took me about 10 hours to complete- I know, #PassionBeyondReason- recieved the response I needed.... I swear, had I not created the hood first it wouldn't have ended up being a hoodless swimsuit!
To be fair it looks pretty hot without a hood.  Yes- I am allowed bragging rights, on this occaision!
Having said this- on the downside, fitting the models for the very first time, between them rehearsing for other brands, hair and make up was not fun at all- which of course is my own fault!
But, it ment that my usual big shpeel of 'how to' and 'how not to' wear the garments....and' what to do' and 'what not to do' was not severely drummed into the models heads prior to the wearing of my collection on the runway.
And on finding out the models were all volunteers and not all professional models, as I had expected. I wish I had drummed 'garment wearing points' very clearly into their heads!
Do not get me wrong the models were fantastic- wonderful to work with and extremely pleasant.  However, an experienced model can wear a balloon, a sack or even a cage and most times safely work and walk the runway, ensuring that press get the all important money shot for the designer.
On seeing some of the images and footage from the event- this was not the case, as some of my dresses where captured gathered up by the models knees! Yikes! We are talking about long gowns that didn't transalate as long gowns in the images for this reason.

Now, lets not get it twisted here: I am not slating, any of the models and this should be a learning curb for all models- up & coming or aspiring.
They looked great, but there is a reason why pro- models are paid to do what they do.  Even tough,, having said that, pro-models or not; the models used for the event, should have been paid, for all their time/effort. That is what I assumed part of my hard earned cash was paying for! And boy did they deserve it!

But to all the team behind Essex Fashion week, I cannot thankyou enough! Now I guess, its over to me now to work hard on chasing all the leads that the twins, Simon and Adam Ryan, their business partners Ali Salim and Joe Sealey have opened for me in allowing Dancing Dolls UK to grace their show at Essex Fashion week day- even!

Giddy new heights!

It was on the early evening of 31st December 2011, and whilst I watched and assisted my little sister in getting ready to join all the other party revellers, counting in the new year in alcohol fuelled style.
I sipped my own drink of choice- Barcardi and Karibbean Kola. I wasn't going to be going out to celebrate with everyone else, but little did I know at that time, I was about to celebrate in a different kind of Fashion.

As I flicked through my emails, catching up and responding to any missed mail, I'd received over the holiday period.
One email, in particular held my attention.

I opened it and as I said goodbye to the sister, I carefully worded my response to the query.
Within minutes, I had received an email back from the sender; my heart gently pounded in chest as my excitement rose.

The enquiry was from a boutique owner, requesting wholesale prices for garments from my line- Dancing Dolls UK.

Recieveing a new stockists for any independent designer is a huge victory: it means that other retailers believe in your creativity enough to invest in your product. It means you are reaching a new market. New heights. Heights that will make an emerging designer giddy.

What was even more exciting and equally nerve racking was the fact that the boutique enquiring are based in New York- Yeah, baby- that New York. New York, U.S fricking A!!!

Whoa! Really??
I had already made a mental memo to secure more stockists for Dancing Dolls UK's 2012 new years resolution.
But Gosh! O giddy, giddy gosh. I didn't expect it sooo soon.

How amazing is that?! Well, I think it is! It will be a promising collaboration, if this small, but crucial consignment goes well!

It is so cool and unbelieveable to think that thus far- all the challenges, I have set out for myself with Dancing Dolls UK have been achieved , greater than my expectations.

Damn, I feel utterly blessed. So as the clock struck 12.00midnight- Great British time. I had successfully negiotated and confirmed my first international stockists.

Helloooooooooooooooooo 2012!......and hello New York!
And hey! Why stop there, in my revelling of Dancing Dolls shenanigans!
Its not like I have the time to update this blog as I should, so when I get the opportunity to do so I better let it all hang out.

In other fashionably exciting news, Dancing Dolls UK has been selected by the team at Nolcha and New York based sylist Alexa Winner www.alexawinner.com (Looks like the states are loving Dancing Dolls UK for 2012) – who has worked with major brands such as Ralph Lauren, John Galliano and Vogue Japan.........and now lil' ol' me, (LOL) for the 'Models 4 Water' http://models4water.org campaign featuring supermodels Georgie Badiel, Heide Lindgren, Lisa Seiffert and Allie Rizzo. 12 supermodels in total.

The campaign is support "the water project" to help the people of Burkina Faso and will be shooting the 2013 St Barts calendar swimsuit calendar on 02/01/2012 , which will be launched/displayed at the launch party for New York Fashion week in September with all credits given to all designers featured including Dancing Dolls UK. Pow!

If you are tryna think, which swimsuit they selected, I bet you guessed it right: 'that' swimsuit- the “Envy me” deep V hooded swimsuit.

Its crazy to think, that a swimsuit, I designed solely within myself in mind would take Dancing Dolls UK so far!!
